Post-election survey

Time for a post-election analysis?

Since the 2006 election, Novus has carried out one of Sweden’s most comprehensive post-election surveys. Following the Swedish general election on 13 September 2026, Novus is once again carrying out a broad study to understand how voters reasoned, what choices they made and what decided their vote.

If you want to understand the issues, drivers and choices that determine voters’ decisions, this is the survey for you.

The post-election survey provides a strategic basis for understanding voters’ priorities, developments in society and the issues that will shape the coming term of office. The insights can be used to support communication, public affairs, external analysis and long-term strategy.

Since the 2022 election, Swedish politics has mainly been shaped by the Tidö Agreement, under which the Moderates, the Christian Democrats and the Liberals govern with the support of the Sweden Democrats and have changed policy in areas such as crime, migration, energy and the economy. At the same time, the world around us has changed dramatically, with Sweden joining NATO in 2024, the war in Ukraine and an increased focus on security and preparedness. Trump’s unpredictable foreign policy and the escalating conflict in the Middle East have also contributed to economic uncertainty and increased pressure on Swedish businesses and households.

At home, gang violence, shootings and bombings have continued to dominate public debate. The police report fewer shootings in 2025 than in 2022, while bombings reached record levels. Voters’ everyday lives have also been affected by inflation, high interest rates and more expensive food and electricity, while the economy has improved and the government has made further investments in the election year.

How much these issues matter for the election result will only be known after the election, and that is exactly what the post-election survey will answer.

Among other things, the post-election survey answers:

  • What were the main reasons for voting for each party?
  • Which parties did voters consider, and which did they finally choose?
  • Was there an important issue that decided their choice of party?
  • What were the most important reasons for voting and the most important issue ahead of the election?
  • What did tactical voting look like?
  • Were voters active in the election campaign?
  • What have voters seen from the parties?
  • How did the party leaders perform in the election campaign?
  • Which party had the best policies on the most important issues?
  • How did voters follow the digital election campaign?
  • Which voting advice applications did they use?
  • How did voters view the tone of the election campaign?

…and many more questions.

What is included

  • A PowerPoint report with analyses and charts at an overall level.
  • Excel tables with relevant breakdowns for your own analysis.
  • Our ambition is to deliver the results as early as four days after the election.
